Death of the Supermen
by
Mark M. DeRobertis
I’m alive, but for now that’s the most I could say
I survive, don’t know how, cuz I can’t just get away
I am caught in a drift that I found myself in
It was hot, it was swift, it was called a solar wind
Is this the end...engines are dead...all I can send...sweat that I bled
Who will it be...out there in space...who will find me...what will I face
One day...one year...it may...be near
I know there’s someone out there...I can feel it
I just can’t say I know where...to reveal it
They’ll save me from a cold death...and surprise me
They’ll find me on my last breath...and revive me
Soon...my screen...picked up...a sign
It....revealed....a life...not mine
Were...there men...out there...like me
Space...so vast...who could...it be
In the mist, through the dust I could make out something
With a hiss, and a thrust, streaking and then hovering
It was huge like the back of a tall skyscraper
A deluge or attack from a starship carrier
Where were they from...what were they called…what moved them on...I was appalled
Now more than one...soon I lost count...never I saw... this large amount
Of steel...so hot...so real...or not
Enormous vessels so vast...they were giant
A new superior caste...and defiant
Passed by my little ship here...but it scared me
I gave them nothing to fear...so they spared me
Then...a streak...of light...appeared
And...the string...of ships...was sheared
Not...a one...survived...that day
What...that was...I just...can’t say
In a flash, all the worlds that I found way out here
With a clash and a swirl they can all just disappear
In the breadth of the space that is mine to play in
Was the death of a race that I thought were super men
